After cataract surgery, the lens implant is surrounded by a capsule that previously held the natural lens resulting in the formation of cataract. In some patients, usually over months to years, this capsule can become thick or misty. This is called ‘posterior capsule opacification’ and can cause glare, blurred or misty vision. It is treated by a YAG laser which makes a small hole in this capsule (‘capsulotomy’) and improves the vision. The laser treatment is done in the clinic and is a procedure. It is not painful and takes approximately 10 minutes. Patients can go home straight away after the treatment, although they should not drive that day.
