What is a cataract and how it is treated?

A cataract is when the eye lens changes from being clear to being cloudy resulting in blurred vision. The word cataract is derived from the Latin term ‘cataracta’ meaning ‘waterfall’.

Cataract surgery is currently the only effective treatment for cataracts. It often occurs in both eyes, but typically only one eye is operated at a time. The operation removes the misty cataract and a clear, artificial intra-ocular lens is inserted into the eye. This is typically performed under local anaesthesia and usually takes 20-30 minutes. Patients having surgery under local anaesthesia can return home within an hour. Eye drops are required for four weeks usually to avoid infection. Due to the insertion of the new artificial lens, your spectacle prescription will be changed and efforts are made to reduce its need. You usually have to visit the optometrist 4-6 weeks after surgery to review the prescription at that stage. Patients having cataract surgery in both eyes often wait before updating their glasses.

Why choose private cataract surgery?

  • Better continuity of care by having the same surgeon to assess the eye
  • Avoiding long waiting lists and delay in visual rehabilitation
  • Extensive choice of high-quality artificial lenses
  • Premium intra-ocular lenses such as toric implants (for astigmatism) and extended depth of focus implants (a new generation of multi-focal lens implants)
  • Reduced need for glasses
I also carry out retinal treatments for all my patients.
Private cataract surgery without insurance

Private cataract surgery without insurance

Private cataract surgery is a viable option, even if it’s not covered by health insurance. This would mean that you are a 'self-paying' patient. If you have insurance, your insurance company might either pay all or share half the fees with you. This depends on the company and the type of insurance policy. My secretary can inform you of the prices, and work with you and the insurance company to clarify costs. Please see contact page for more details.

I am registered to work with the following private medical insurance providers:

Aviva Health, AXA PPP Healthcare, Bupa, Cigna, CS Healthcare, Exeter Family Friendly, Healix, Vitality Health (Pru Health), Simplyhealth and WPA.
  • Blue Blocking Filter Lens, To Protect Macula, Alcon, SN60WF
